The world

Aetheria

A mainland and the islands off its coast. 6 mainland zones take a player from level 1 to 30 one after the other; 2 island zones overlap them, so levelling branches, and ferries sail out to them. Beyond it lies a second map: the Corsair Reaches, an ocean only a guild ship reaches.

The mainland
The world map of Aetheria: a green mainland with snowy peaks in the north-east, marshes in the south, and islands out at sea.
HighcrestQuesting zoneIsland zoneDungeonRaidSea laneSaltmarrow Quay: ships to the Reaches

The map as the game renders it. Players walk and ride it in real time, and take the ferries out to the islands.

Questing zones

Level 1 to 30, with a choice on the way

At the overlapping levels players pick a zone by their own taste and by how crowded it is, and stay there while it fits. Nobody sails out for a single level.
Ferries

Out to the islands

The mainland is one landmass: everyone rides about it. The islands off its coast are reached by ferry, from a harbour, on a ship that works one lane. 5 ships sail between 5 harbours.

Walk, sail, walk

A walk that would cross the water becomes a walk to the docks, the voyage, and a walk from the far quay. The map draws the passengers on their ship.

The sea takes real time

An island stint that starts in the hall, or ends with logging off, loses the time at sea, which earns nothing.

Islands pay for it

Island quests pay 30% more XP to make up for the crossing, and island bounties include the voyage there and back in their hours.

The quickest chain of lanes

A trip sails the shortest chain of lanes there and back. The Drowned Reef is reached only by way of Port Cinder.

The game's world map: a ferry with guildmates on deck crosses a sea lane while others walk the mainland.
In the game: whoever takes a ferry boards it, and the map sails it down the lane with them on deck.
